  • Manchester United lost 4-3 to Copenhagen in their fourth group stage game
  • The Danes equalised for 2-2 from the penalty spot in a chaotic first-half
  • It set an unwanted record for the Red Devils in the Champions League

Manchester United's misery keeps compounding after their third defeat in four games in the group stage of this season's UEFA Champions League, which they set an unwanted record.

United came into the game needing a win to give themselves hope of making it to the knockout stages, and as they have done on multiple occasions this season when the pressure is high, they fell to defeat.

They raced to a two-goal lead within the first 27 minutes through Rasmus Hojlund, but a Marcus Rashford red card changed the game's direction, and they lost.

Per ESPN UK, they have lost nine of their 17 games in all competitions this season. The last time this happened was the 1973/74 season, in which they were relegated from the First Division.

Man Utd set unwanted UCL record

Copenhagen's second goal came from the penalty spot after Harry Maguire handled the ball in the box, and Diogo Goncalves fired past Andre Onana to make it 2-2 before halftime.

Per TNT Sports, since records began in 2003/04, United were the first team to concede a penalty in their first four games of a Champions League season.

Harry Kane scored the first penalty during Bayern Munich's 3-2 win on the opening day, while Mauro Icardi missed for Galatasaray at Old Trafford before scoring the winning goal.

Copenhagen nearly nicked a point in the first leg after Scott McTominay's foul in the box, but Onana saved, and again in the second leg, the three-time UCL winner couldn't keep their composure in the box.

To add to the disastrous night, Erik ten Hag's team were the first in the club's history in Europe to lose a match despite leading by two goals plus, as noted by Opta.

Ten Hag criticises referee

Sports Brief reported on ten Hag criticising the referee after his team's embarrassing defeat to Copenhagen away in Denmark, which further dented their hopes of progression.

He was displeased with their host's first goal, which he claimed was offside, said Maguire's handball leading to a penalty was unfair because his arm was in a natural position and felt their red card was harsh.
